Open Winters

I have often in this blog mentioned that most people have very short weather memories.  The lack of snow on the ground this year has brought many inquiries about the last time this occurred, or in several instances, people told me that this has never happened in their area.  Similar conditions have occurred in 2017, 2015, 2012 and I could give other examples, but those are just the most recent.  Of course, a single snow storm always changes localized conditions, so as is often the case when dealing with historical weather data, your conditions may vary.  If you back farther in time, open winters were also common, meaning this winter was in no way unique.
