The recording and study of the timing of natural events, such as when the ice goes out on a lake, or when bushes or trees bloom, is called phenology. I have been keeping track of when some ornamental crab apple trees have been blooming since 2002. They are in the process of blooming the past couple of days. These crabapple trees have bloomed as early as May 7 in 2005 and on May 28 back in the extremely cold spring of 2013. Blooming this week would be about the average for the past 20 years. We have had more cool springs than warm springs so far this century and after a warm March, the past 6 weeks were mostly below average.
