We have certainly experienced some bitterly cold days this winter. But overall, temperatures have been above average far more frequently than below average in the past 6 weeks. With the upper air patterns not fluctuating much in recent weeks, this means if we are not all that cold, somewhere else it must be to even things out across the northern hemisphere. Parts of Europe and Asia has been below average and have those areas have built up a lot of cold air, meaning, if the patterns switch, there will be plenty of cold air to quickly shift our pattern from not so cold, to quite cold in a big hurry. There are signs of some subtle changes coming in the next two weeks.
