If you live in or near Fargo, the long-term average coldest it gets each winter is -28˚. The coldest we got this past cold snap was -25˚. Close enough to be near what we average at least once each winter. Other parts of the region, especially north and west of Fargo, got to or even exceeded their long term average, but no area got even close to all-time record category. There has been talk of the -60 at Lake Metigoshe State park, but that was clearly an instrumentation error. I actually have that same thermometer set up in my backyard and have seen similar problems with my device. As we all know when it gets as cold as it has been, many electronic devices were not meant for these extremes.
